Key points for establishing WOSR
A well-established rape crop is more resilient against slug and pigeon grazing, spring droughts and should allow more savings on fertiliser using canopy management.

1. Lime needs to be > 6.0; ideally 6.5
2. P –added at drilling if index low. Bag or two of 10:10:20/ac and/or slurry/dung etc. If soil P is index 1 or 2, I would plough in slurry/dung and place/broadcast a bag or more of 10:10:20/ac before sowing
3. Reduce compaction as much as possible – each man needs to figure this out himself.
4. Don’t drill too deep, about half inch to 1 inch depth but depends on the soil.
5. Drill AURELIA /AVIRON /BEATRIX CL (hybrids) at 50 seeds /m2 or bag to 7.5 ac (3 ha).
6. Roll well after sowing, maybe twice in the middle of fields – will be most important if slugs are an issue.
7. Pre-emerg weed control is the best start but expensive if the crop fails so get soil and establishment right
8. Spread slug pellets at sowing on top of the ground or watch it very carefully until true/rough leaves expand
9. Kill volunteers with graminicide in Oct
10. Half dose of Proline as late as you can in Oct or November – travel as late as you can. 1/3 of Boron with this; balance in spring

Variety Agronomic & Quality Characteristics
Do you know which variety is Ireland’s most consistent Winter Barley?
Belfry is the most consistent winter barley on DAFM RL beating control yields in 26 out of 30 DAFM winter barley trials (2016-2021).
