Seedtech Forage Options 2015
Seedtech are currently in our second year of trialling fodder, energy and sugar beets for the Irish market. We have over 10 varieties in trial with more new varieties being added in 2015. Our aim is to have reliable, accurate and consistent data to support our selection of beets across the different usage categories. This will help the Irish farmer to select the right beet for their enterprise. Our trials look at all areas of the forage including yield, dry matter percentage, dirt tare etc. Blizzard, our flagship fodder beet variety, is utilised across all farming systems due to its high dry matter percentage, increasing intake potential and high yields of dry matter and fresh weight giving value for money.
Maize has become one of the most sought after crops along with beet for energy on Irish farms. Its flexibility through ensiling means it can be conserved on farms for use at any time of the year. Seedtech have been trialling maize for many years with over 100 varieties in our own trials, 17 in official trials and 5 varieties on the official recommended lists for maize. The market for maize is set to grow as demand for energy feed increases with the expansion of cow numbers and milk output. Maize, being an excellent complement to grazed grass, is best suited to fill the gap that will be created. 2015 will see Severus (open variety) and Grosso (covered variety) added to the Irish Recommended List. Grosso is the first variety in 4 years to be accepted onto the Irish Recommended List and this is testament to the continued trialling carried out by Seedtech.
